Cleaning up a messy room can be a daunting task. It's hard to know where to begin and what to think about first when faced with the clutter that accumulates on a daily basis.
And can someone please tell me how it is that I clean up the kitchen and living room every single evening and still wake up to a mess in the morning? Seriously!?
I guess real people living real life equals everyday messes sometimes. And when you throw in the clutter that has piled up over days, weeks, or even years, it can seem almost too overwhelming to handle.
But whether I'm tackling a long-overdue disaster zone or simply attacking the mess in my kitchen first thing in the morning, there's a basic "formula" I usually follow. It helps me take the first step towards cleaning up, which usually leads me to take the next step, and the one after that.
What's great is that these steps work on any messy room in the house, no matter how big or small it might be. And they're so simple that the kids can even use them to clean up their own messy room!
How To Clean a Messy Room
1. Throw away any trash.
First things first, throw away the food wrappers, empty snack packages, junk mail, and unnecessary shopping bags to make the room look better with very little effort. You might want to use a timer and see how much trash you can find in just a few short minutes. The quick success will give you motivation to keep working.
2. Put away items that obviously do not belong in the room.
Put the vacuum away in the front closet, return the scissors to the kitchen drawer, toss the dirty towels into the bathroom hamper. Often, a quick look around will reveal things that can be removed from the room without much thought. This is a basic "grab-and-go" before you begin any kind of sorting and organizing.
3. Put away anything that can be take care of quickly.
If you see things in the room that just need put in their proper places, it's usually best to take care of them first, before moving on to the more challenging cleaning, sorting, and organizing. For example, when cleaning up the kitchen return any food items to the fridge and pantry and put away the clean dishes before moving on to scrubbing the appliances or sorting the pile of paperwork on the counter.
4. Moving around the room, clean small sections at a time.
Pick one area of the room to start with and work on a very small section until its completely clean and clutter-free so you can easily recognize your progress. Work your way around the room from there so you can always see how far you've come and what is left to do. This way, if you have to leave the task to be finished another day, you'll know exactly where to pick back up.
5. Clean up at the end of cleaning up.
If you've spent a lot of time cleaning a messy room, be sure you leave the area looking as nice as possible when you're ready to call it quits, even if the entire job isn't done. Toss the cleaning cloths into the laundry, take out the trash, and tidy up the room so it looks like you've been working as hard as you know you have!
Avoiding the mess doesn't make it go away. But following these simple steps for cleaning up a messy room will help you tackle the day-to-day messiness or even an overwhelming disaster zone. Just keep at it a little bit every day and watch your progress add up!

How do I get rid of drugstore beetles?

Controlling drugstore beetles begins with a thorough inspection. It is important to find everything that they have infested. Insecticide application is the final step. It should be applied only in cracks and crevices. The object is to help eliminate any beetles that may be hiding without contaminating surfaces. Incomplete treatment can allow survivors to re-infest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Drugstore beetles live inside stored foods and many other items that are kept in unsecured containers. Kitchens and pantries are common targets, especially areas prone to spills and crumbs. They can also survive for weeks without food. If the pests are not completely removed, they are likely to reemerge from their hiding places and start a new infestation.
Their common name is derived from the insect actively infesting items previously common in drugstore infestations. Although not nearly as common in drugstores now, they are reported to consume some prescription drugs in addition to foods and other materials. They can even bore through aluminum foil, so prevention is difficult.
Contamination
The main concern with drugstore beetles is contamination of the products they infest. The pests do the most damage in their larval form as they live, eat, and excrete waste within the products they've infested.
Signs of drugstore beetle are the adults seen buzzing around or resting on surfaces. Other signs include holes in packaging where the beetles have emerged and debris deposited next to infested items as the larvae feed. It can be difficult to find infestations in other parts of the home. A flashlight will help with the inspection.

Appearance
Color: It is brown in color
Size: The drugstore beetle is a small insect. The adult is about 2 to 3.5 mm long.
Wings: The wing covers are lined with parallel rows of deep pits or punctures. The adult beetles can fly, and they are attracted to light.
Body: The pest is oval-shaped. Viewed from above, the head is not visible, so the beetle appears to be "humped."

Horn
Drugstore beetles have even been found in products that are poisonous like strychnine.
Habitat
Homeowners often discover adult beetles in the pantry or near the kitchen windows. Because they can infest such a variety of materials, they can become a problem in more than one part of a home.
Reproduction
The adult beetle lays eggs on the food. When the larva hatches, it eats and grows. The larva stage lasts for several months spins a silken cocoon when fully grown. Inside the cocoon, it takes more than two weeks for the larva to change to an adult. In a warm climate, drugstore beetles can produce as many as four generations per year.

The drugstore beetle, is a pest of stored products. The scientific name, paniceum, comes from the Latin word for bread. Some people suspect that the drugstore beetle's common name came from its tendency to infest the herbs that early druggists used as medicine.

1. A tiny thatched cottage full of light and space

Lapped on three sides by a quintessential country garden, tumbling with roses, sweet peas and lavender, this pocket-size home in a sleepy Wiltshire village is overlooked only by the church tower and a few horses in the neighboring field. 3. A thatched 18th century country cottage
A quick sketch on a paper napkin led to a new look for a neglected, former forester's cottage in Snowdonia, as Lucinda Griffith spotted renovation potential that others had missed, and all on a tight budget. In a remote forest setting, the house had been empty for years – the reason for that, Lucinda believes, was that 'people couldn't picture how they'd live there or why they'd live there.' However, she had no trouble, taking cares to carefully transform the sad, neglected cottage into a fabulous home, restored on a shoestring, and full of inspiring money-saving ideas. It is hard to imagine, looking at this picture-perfect thatched cottage, that the original section – one upstairs room, one downstairs – was built in just one day. This is a so-called 'squatter's cottage', dating back to 1725. Common Law of the time declared that if a house could be built within 24 hours, with smoke coming from its chimney at the end of the day, then the builder could claim the land as his own.
The cottage has been added to in subsequent centuries and the current owners have taken care to preserve the period features, while adding a new bathroom, updating the kitchen and freshening the interiors to make a homely, welcoming space. See inside the squatter's cottage.

4. An idyllic 1950s Irish coastal cottage

After visiting Ireland on a painting holiday, Sue and Mark Gilkey decided to buy a traditional cottage there with an inspiring coastal setting. The couple completed the sale in 2013, when buyers were 'as rare as hen's teeth' according to their solicitor. 5. A historic stonemason's country cottage

This pretty riverside cottage was built in 1840 in the local Derbyshire limestone and has one unique feature - a sturdy outhouse was once the village lock-up where unruly drunks would have been kept overnight! 6. A part-thatched country cottage restored

Built in the mid-17th century as part of a row of seven farmworker's dwellings, the main, central section of this part-thatched cottage had collapsed and had to be rebuilt. Its architect owner gradually pieced it back together again, using traditional methods, and modern or salvaged equivalents of the materials used when it was first built. 7. A shoemaker's country cottage

Grade-II listed and in a conservation area overlooking the green and duck pond in an idyllic village on Dorset's Jurassic Coast, this pretty cottage left its owners few options for extending. It had once belonged to the village shoemaker and cobbler who had lived a spartan existence. A new wood-burning stove in the living room, and a new floor and Aga in the kitchen soon made things more homely, and eventually a modest extension, just 10 square metres, provided more space in the kitchen-diner and extending the roofline to add a dormer added much-needed space for the master bedroom. 8. A Scottish croft by the sea
This lowly lochside croft on the west coast of Scotland has been remodelled to create a comfortable home full of traditional charm. The property had been empty for seven years and was near derelict.
It was the oldest house in the village, built in 1780 as a two-room croft with one room for animals and one for the family. The cottage had been extended in the 1950s when the original thatched roof was replaced by a corrugated tin one.
